4-3-3 Diamond Defense

by Joshua
(Idaho)

This formation is popularly used in U14 - U18 teams and in high school teams. It consists of 4 defenders (1 stopper, 2 outsides, and 1 sweeper), 3 midfielders, and 3 forwards. It has great strength in its diamond defensive formation for its ability to create great passing opportunities between all 4 defenders.

Also when one defender is applying pressure to the other team and challenging balls, the sweeper serves as a last resort and back-up before the goalie. This formation can be proved as very successful when used with great passing defenders combined with a quick, physical stopper.
