Continuous Attacking Drill

by Peter S.
(Danbury, CT, USA)

Players: 9-12 plus GK

Set up: 3 teams with different colored pinnies, GK in full sized goal. Cones 25 yards out from goal delineating a free zone>

Object: teams must look to create a goal from a first time (one touch) shot playing 3 v 6 or 4 v 8 on attack.

Rules: goals CANNOT be scored within the 6 yd box.

On EVERY change of possession, the ball must be played back into the free zone, before the next attack begins.

On shots that are wide or saved, the first player to sprint to the end line earns possession for his/her team. Rule clarification: any player closer to the end line than the 6 yd line may not be the player to reach the end line for possession (poacher's rule). Players in the free zone cannot be tackled. Scoring a goal retains possession from the free zone.

Objective within the game: link up to create one touch opportunities on goal against greater numbers defensively.

Most goals have to be well earned. Poachers do not gain an advantage. GK is neutral and decides who gets to the end line first. In this case, possession starts behind the 25 yard line free zone uncontested...once the ball is played into the attacking zone, play is live. Defenders who win the ball before a shot is taken must play the ball back beyond the 25 yd line before going to goal.

Goals are hard to come by in this drill, much like the sport itself. Players must be quick, motivated and relentless to score.
