For Outside Mieldfielders

by Isaac Ofori
(Worcester MA U.S.A)

Just like the strikers you need to be hungry for the ball when it is on the angles. Be very quick have, good ball handling, shoot from side angels and usually aim for the upper ninety when you get the ball. When you are in the eighteen try to finish with a shot at the goal as quickly as possible.

Another important skill that you need to master as the outside midfielder is the ability of beating your opponents in 1vs1 situations. You will often find yourself on the flank with one or two opponents in front of you. It is therefore very crucial to know how to get around them.

It is therefore important to learn the art of dribbling. But keep in mind that you should not overdo things. Do not try to dribble 4-5 opponents in a row cause you will likely lose the ball. Of course, if you have the same skills like Messi or CR7 then go for it. If not, then pass the ball to a near standing teammate.

Practice also on your crosses as well. These are crucial as the strikers and forwards must be served by quality crosses in order to score goals. If you watch professional games you’ll notice how good outside midfielder's are on serving the attacking players with quality crosses. Try to study them and adapt their way of playing.
