This is how I see defensive when I see my teammate (because I play striker, but have experimented with every position with advice from my coach). 1. Pass the ball! In order to stay in your position, pass! The ball will get onto the other half quicker and if you lose the ball trying to dribble, the other team practically has a penalty kick on your goalie. 2. Have these things (of course at a good level:
Reaction time Speed
Passing
Knowledge to get the ball from the other players Help from other defenders! (It's not a solo position. In fact, no position is!)
Good ball control
A strong voice (optional for receiving a pass, and if you are a very strong shooter and if you are open, when you get the ball, pass to a midfielder. If you are extremely good in passing, pass to a striker).
Good observation skills (see if the striker approaching you is left-handed, unstable, etc). If you forget everything else, remember this! Be a fast thinker!
This is completely different thing compared to reaction time! That is what I know involving playing as a defender, but if you want to know more, talk with a, actual defender you know.

Yes, this is a great idea. by: Mirsad Hasic
Hello Ayala, I like your ideas and i believe that all defensive players should participate more in the offensive game.
If you look at some of the best teams in the world (Barcelona, Inter etc) you will notice that their defenders are often following up in their attacks.
One player you should study is Dani Alves (plays for Barcelona currently) who is great in the offensive game.
