How To Shield The Soccer Ball

I’m a center forward and need help on holding of my man and holding up the ball and when to turn.

THE ANSWER

In order to hold up the ball you need to learn how to shield it. Also, knowing when to turn is something that comes with experience. It is very hard to say when you should turn or not but the general rule is to check whether you have a defender behind you once the ball is on its way to your feet.

In that case, you could run at the ball, pretend that you will go to the right and then go to the left. Hopefully, you will get rid of the opponent as he will be caught on the supporting leg and it will be very hard for him to switch immediately after you.

To shield the ball you should try to keep the ball at least a half yard in front of you in order to prevent the opponent from getting a toe on it. Also, try to arch over the ball a bit as it will help you shield the ball better.

If you really want to learn how to score goals, win heading duels and shield the ball like a wall, I recommend you to take a look at the Soccer Positions Guide which is a book that explains everything you need to know in order to succeed as center forward.
