I've resisted the temptation to get involved so far. And I plan to continue to let my son work this out.
I hadn't considered that they are not playing with that position in the formation right now. There is other competition for his spot, but they are the same boys he came to this club with that were on his team last year.
The trainer appears to be "grooming" him for something and is teaching him to keep the other players in formation while playing the center defender position.
