Improve my quickness

by naren
(bangalore)

Though I am a seasoned soccer player who plays midfield I find myself lacking pace in tense situations also though my stamina holds good I find my pace lacking what is the routine exercises (without expensive machinery) to improve this aspect? Is it necessary to be quick in football?

THE ANSWER

Pace can often come through genes which mean that some people are actually born with fast running abilities. However, there are measurements you can take in order to improve your pace on the soccer field. One thing that soccer players tend to forget is that running with and without a ball are two completely different things.

There are many players that are pretty fast but with a ball at their feet you will notice that these players are pretty harmless. I will focus my answer on giving you advice on how to improve your pace with a ball because I assume that this is what you are looking for.

The best exercise I know is to run with a ball at your feet. I don’t know about you but personally I hate to participate in exercises where the ball is not involved. One simple exercise is to put 2 cones 50 yards from each other. You should then perform a maximum run while keeping the ball under control at your feet.

Some other things you should know about how to improve your pace are:

- Your upper body should be relaxed.

- Study your running technique. Many players have fast feet but neglect the length of their legs. An increased stride pattern can improve your pace tremendously.

- A strong upper body.

It will take you a while to notice some results from your pace training. However, give it 2-3 months and you will notice that your pace abilities have increased. Good Luck
