One on One With the Soccer Keeper

by John
(Chester)

I've been playing as a centre midfielder for the start of this season, and there have been a couple of times when I've been through one on one with the keeper, but I missed both chances.

I miss-hit one and it went wide and the other went straight into the keeper's hands, I've been practicing in training but I've found it difficult to get an accurate or even a clean shot while sprinting on to the through ball. Is there any advice you can offer?

THE ANSWER

Hello John, well, the most important advice I can give you is to keep yourself calm and wait for the keeper to make the first move. Of course, this requires you to keep your eyes on the keeper and not on the ball which means that you need to pose pretty good ball skills.

You can also watch for the weak foot of the keeper. This mean that the keeper will often put his body weight on one leg (e.g. right) and if you shot the ball (at his left side) it will be almost impossible for him to move his weight at the left and then dive to save the ball.

I am discussing this topic more briefly in The Ultimate Guide To Soccer Positions where you will also learn how to score more goals, how to beat your opponents in dribbling duels and how to win heading duels. I recommend you strongly to check it out.

Regards, Mirsad
