Playing good defense

by Megan Barrett
(Lenoir, North Carolina)

You should never run full force at your opponent when they have the ball, because that makes it very easy for them to simply tap it by you. Instead you should approach them at a moderate speed, and turn your body (always keeping your shoulders squared to the opponent) to force them one way, preferably toward the sideline.

Always keep your eye on the ball, and not on your opponent’s feet. Place your feet staggered (one foot in front of the other) so they can’t kick the ball between your feet. Wait for them to mess up, and then take the ball.

As soon as you get possession, explode quickly and pass the ball to a midfielder or wide for a forward to run onto. But if you are facing your own goal, play it back to your goalie or furthest back defender. ALWAYS make the simple play!
