Self Confidence on The Soccer Field

by Jose P Gutierrez
(Hampton, VA, USA)

My name is Jose P. I have been playing soccer for many years, I considered myself well skilled, good passer, good shooter and I am in an O.K shape. Sometimes I feel like my teammates are not happy with my performance and I start messing up more and more.

It's frustrating because I know I have potential, but when it comes to pressure I feel like I am not good at all and I start messing the passes and I don't know where to run, who to mark. I would like to know a good technique to control my mind and explode that potential I have to do well. My position is left midfielder and I am a right footer. Thanks for your time.

THE ANSWER

Hello Jose, what you are describing is pretty common with players that have recently started to learn the tactical part of soccer. You see, there are 2 sides of soccer, one with tactical responsibility and the other when you are using your fantasy to beat your opponent’s defense.

The tactical part is not hard to learn, but the key to becoming skillful in it is to have a coach than instructs you how to behave in the defense game. For example, when you are playing on the flank, you are sometimes supposed to cover up for your fullback when he is moving up in the field (e.g. starting a contra attack).

This is something that your coach needs to point out and give you proper education on your tactical responsibilities. The other part is what I like to call "fantasy for the game" and depends only on you. For example, knowing whether to shot, pass or dribble is not something that your coach can instruct you to do once you have the ball during the game as you need to learn this and pick the best possible alternative for that current situation.

So, what I would recommend you to talk with your coach and explain your dilemma. I am sure that he will be very glad as coaches’ love when players come to them and ask them for help on how to improve their game. I would also recommend you to take a look at my book which will give you tips on how to improve your game with the ball in several levels.
