Short Soccer Goalie With Big Dreams

by Nicole
(Canada)

I’m only five foot two and it doesn’t help as much as I’d like, especially when I’m playing as goalkeeper. I play keeper for my travel team and we are actually very good. But looking around at other teams and other keeper’s there’s a visible difference.

I’m just about one of the shortest keepers in my division and I have finished growing (according to my doctor). But it really hasn’t stopped me. I mean it’s hard because everyone is now growing taller than me and I can get caught easier in little chip balls or quick shots to the upper 90s.

Last year on my high school team I wasn’t given the opportunity to play keeper because there was a girl who everyone thought was amazing and I was never given the chance so I played the field. Looking back on it I regret not opening my mouth because I love playing goalkeeper.

I feel it’s my calling and I want to reach my possible playing capability. Recently I received news that this girl isn’t going to my school anymore and the positions all mine. Everyone’s looking down on me now because they haven’t seen me play and nobody has faith in my goalkeeping.

My travel team gladly says I’m an above average keeper for our level and I’ve had numerous goalkeeper trainers from all over and my point is even though nobody expects anything from me or believes I’m capable, I am able to believe in myself and prove everyone wrong in following my dreams.
