Soccer Defenders Responsibility

by Greg Lau
(Melbourne, FL USA)

Should a left/right defender ever take the ball down the sideline and attempt to center the ball? Or is it the defender's job to get the ball to the offense?

THE ANSWER

Hello Greg, the answer is yes, but this depends mainly on how your team is playing. For example, in a 4-4-2 formation the left and right fullback is supposed to follow up in the defense in order to help the offense. While in a 3-5-1 the left and right fullback should stay mainly on their side of the field as the team is already well balanced offensively.

My personal thoughts on this is that a skillful left/right fullback is good with the ball and can serve (if necessary) accurate passes to the forwards/strikers. Just check the Dani Alves or Douglas Maicon, both of these are ideal examples on fullbacks that are great at combining their offensive and defensive qualities.

If you would like to learn more about your duties as fullback and reveal the secrets on how to succeed on this position I would recommend you to take a look at my "Soccer Positions" book.

P.S if you have some more questions feel free to ask them and I will try to respond as soon as possible.
