Equipment Required for Playing Soccer

The required equipment for playing soccer is specified in the Laws of the Game which is created by the association of soccer.

To play soccer you only need to have approved shin guards and a pair of soccer shoes. Equipment for soccer is generally cheap, which makes it affordable for anyone to buy.

If you play soccer often you may want to invest in some quality soccer shoes, but I want you to remember that the shoes will not increase your soccer skills.

Keep in mind that Maradona didn’t have any soccer shoes before he filled 16 years old. The basic equipment needed for soccer is following:

Jersey

Usually many clubs in professional soccer have their sponsor’s logos on the front of their jersey.

If you find a sponsor for your team that will stand for the cost of your team jersey then you and your team mates will surely be forced to carry sponsor’s logo on the front of your jersey.

Shorts

Back in the seventies soccer shorts were extremely tight and short but these days their length is almost equal to the basketball shorts.

Footwear

This is probably the most important part of the equipment for soccer. With quality cleats you will be able to perform better, but as I said before, even the most expensive shoes will not transform you into a better soccer player.

It’s very important to try your shoes before buying them, because soccer shoes need to sit tight and you also need to see if the shoes model is made for your feet.

For example I usually buy Adidas because their model is excellent for my feet, but it’s impossible for me to even try the Nike soccer shoes because they are usually great for people with long and small feet.

Shin pads

Watch out for these to, try them before buying them. I remember when I bought my first soccer shin pads; they were so huge so I was forced to cut them to be able wearing them.

Socks

Usually this is the most cheap part of equipment needed for soccer and I recommend you to have at least 2-3 pair.

Goalie

As a goalkeeper you must always wear colors that are easily distinguishable from all other players and referees.

You are allowed to wear a cap if the sun is too strong while the outfield players don’t have permission to do that.

No Glasses

Players are not allowed to wear glasses during a regular game. If you have sight problems you should consider to buy lenses as it will make your life much more easier (at least on the field 🙂

Watches, jewelry or other type of items that could pose a danger to other players are forbidden by the official soccer rules.

Referee

In most case referees, assistant referee and fourth officials all wear black kits. However there are other ordinary colors like yellow or red.

Other equipment for soccer that referee must have is at least one yellow and red.
