Soccer Goal Kicks

by Amanda Wilson
(Ohio)

Hi, I play for my high school soccer team, and I am currently the starting sweeper. I have practiced countless times, and my coach has tried to fix my problem, but nothing seems to work. I have a problem taking goal kicks. I am not a small girl, I weight lift with my team, and I have a very strong kick, but when it comes to goal kicks it doesn’t happen.

I can kick the ball high when it's moving, but not still, sometimes I can, but not always. Is there a different style of kicking or anything that you have in mind? I'd really appreciate this, it's my senior year next year and I want it to be great!

Thank You!

THE ANSWER

Hello Amanda, well I can understand your frustration as I used to have these problems as well when I was younger. However, once you learn how to do it properly it will be a piece of cake. I don’t know if you have check out my "soccer kicking technique" but it explains pretty well how to kick the ball over 40 yards (or more).

The fact is that it is usually easier to kick the ball far when it is still rather than when the ball is moving. However, the important things to keep in mind are following (whether the ball is moving or still):

* The more you can bring your kicking leg back the more power which means basically that the ball will fly further.

* The more you can lean your body back the more height on the ball. 20-30 degrees should be enough.

* Your ankle should be locked during the kick.

I know that you feel frustrated but the only thing you can do is to keep in mind what I’ve said and practice as much as you can. Don’t give up, wish you all the best.
