Soccer Throw in Question

by Scott
(Canastota,ny)

My daughter played a soccer game today and I am trying to help her play. My question is when your teammate is throwing the ball in, should you cover one of the opposing players, or should you try to get away from them?

THE ANSWER

Hello Scott, when a teammate is throwing the ball, you should try to find a free are without having an opponent covering you. However, this is often very hard as the opponents will usually cover any player that is on his/her way to receive a ball from the throw in.

A smart strategy is to run 1-2 yards at the side and the rush in the direction of the player that is performing the throw in order to receive the ball. On this way, you will be able to get rid of your opponents 1-2 seconds which will be enough to receive the ball and put it under control.

If you want to learn more about how to become a skillful soccer player I would recommend you to check out my soccer books as well which are a great resource for any soccer parent, coach or player.
