Switching Fullbacks with midfielders while playing

by Melvin Vargas

Usually the midfielders are the players that get tired the most because they run to help the forwards and back to help the fullbacks. With other words, if you want to succeed as midfielder you should know that good stamina is really an important part that you need to pose. Good ball handling is also very important as you don’t want to lose the ball at your own half.

I have coached AYSO for 13 years and I teach the fullbacks to be able to play both positions. On my command the fullbacks would change with the midfielders so midfielders would take a little break plus we had a stronger midfield all the time.

This is a very good strategy for developing your player’s ability to read the game and adapt themselves quickly to new directions. Also, you may also want to switch forwards with midfielders and vice versa. It is your decision to decide what suits your team best.

Keep in mind to have patience if you are coaching younger players as they may need to repeat your directions few times in order to have them understand you completely. Thank you for the opportunity to share my knowledge on this site.
