What is The Right Soccer Position For My Skills?
Hi! I have been taken soccer seriously since I was twelve with kids who are way experienced than me, as well as older in my neighborhood. We have also been accompanied by two senior professional football players, thus I have been getting pretty good practice.
Though that was abroad, and now I am back to my home country. I have realized what I am best at in soccer, and that is dribbling. I am fast and got great skills. My friends recommend me to play as a left winger, but I have no clue as to which position to play!
I make great use of my speed, and dribbling, but I am not a powerful shooter at all. Could you please help me out in choosing which position I may best function in since the tryouts to make it into the school soccer team are approaching. Currently I am thirteen. Thank you.
THE ANSWER
Picking the right position can be really tricky, especially when you are young. However, it sounds to me that you could play either as striker, winger or left/right fullback (depending on the tactic used by your coach). However, keep in mind just because you are playing on a particular position that you will stay there for the rest of your soccer career.
Changing the soccer position can bring you great results and I’ve seen several players that were playing as strikers that changed to fullbacks and become professionals after only few seasons. I am also discussing your dilemma in
my book which covers every soccer positions and explains what skills are best suited for each of them.
