What Soccer Position Should I Play?
by Munashe
(UAE)
I generally play in a defensive position but I don't think I was built for it because I’m quite small only 5'5 and I’m 14. I also only weight 35kg so whenever the defending has to come to strength I nearly always lose.
I'm good at tackling and intercepting passes.
I used to be really fast but during the holidays everyone grew taller and bigger and faster than me and I’m now regarded as only moderately fast. Personally I enjoy playing on the wing and as a striker but though my dribbling is okay it's nothing to write home about and my crossing is very inconsistent. When I shoot I lack power and my heading is absolutely horrible.
Sometimes when my Osgood Schlatter disease kicks in I don't play at 100% and I was wondering if there was any way to get rid of it without having to stop playing sports for a while. My passing is quite good but I’m weak under pressure. So anyway thank you for reading my letter and please help me with picking a position in which I can play in for at least quite a while.
THE ANSWER
Hello Munashe, when it comes to your injury I would recommend you to visit a specialist as I can’t give you any advice on how to get rid of it. When it comes to the position you should play, I do not think that you should mainly put emphasize on your weight. I think that you are pretty clever and smart on the soccer field which means that you can compensate your weight with these skills instead.
The skills you are describing are important for any soccer player (e.g. crossing, shooting and heading). In other words, you need to practice harder on them and really focus on improving them. I would also recommend you to check out
my book which covers every soccer position and explains what skills you need to pose in order to succeed at them.
